About Me

Hi, I’m Chelsea Vos, a senior Theatre Arts major from Loyola Marymount University (LMU). I have been performing in theater since I was eight years old, and over time, I found my passion in this venue has been stage makeup. As a thespian in high school theatre classes, I became more hands-on with different makeup looks. The first time I created a scar on my face was in 10th grade, and I found it quite fun. I then realized how creative you could get with scar wax. The more experience I had in creating particular looks on other people and myself for plays I was performing in, the more interest I had in expanding my knowledge on the use of makeup to heighten the audience’s experience of a storyline in a play. My interest in stage makeup has grown and evolved. I love expressing myself by doing my makeup daily, trying out new eyeshadow looks, experimenting with highlights, watching experts, and learning new techniques that can enhance my skills in applying makeup both on and off the stage.

Last year, I took a stage makeup class, easily one of my favorite courses during my four years at LMU! I learned great techniques in class and enjoyed collaborating with other students. The professor encouraged creativity and furthered my love for the variety of looks that can be created for the theatre. This website is my senior thesis, and visitors will be introduced to the basics of stage makeup products and techniques used to help transform the actors to enhance and further the play’s story. I developed the following stage makeup characters that can be in a play: Drag Glam, Mature Glamorous, Mystical Water Fairy, Mystical Forest Fairy, Zombie & Apocalypse (special effects including bruising & scars), and Aging.

I encountered a few challenges, especially in implementing the aging techniques on my model. It is important not to get discouraged when trying to get a specific look in a character because so many factors can impact the final look. Things like what age the character is supposed to be. A mature character may need to look like any number of age groups, say 18 – 35, 35 – 55, 55+, and the amount of wrinkles, dark circles, hair color, sun exposure, and other skin looks would be different for these general age groups. It’s also essential to understand the character when developing the image that you want to create. If the character has had a rough life or maybe is a drug addict or alcoholic, then they may look much older than someone who has led a healthy and stress-free life. The stage size can also impact your stage makeup, so if it’s a really large stage, you’ll want to be more exaggerated in your use of makeup versus a small, intimate playhouse where you can use less material. Stage lighting also makes a difference, so you need to know the special lighting that your character will be in before you create your character’s makeup. The bottom line is it’s important to apply makeup to create a character that gives the illusion of how the actor should appear in the story.
